Day 1: Starting Wood Working (Isaak)
The first day of the wood working A-Term was a introduction to some of the tools we are going to be able to use and how different cuts of wood can be stronger than another. The first machine we used was a jointer it smooths out raw pieces of wood through sliding the wood through it. The next was a plainer that was used to make boards thinner. The last was a standard table saw which was used to cut boards smaller and into the shapes we needed. We also decided on what projects we were going to make over the course of the A-term I decided on a chess board, I also thought of also making a mug but ultimately decided on a chess board with a cabinet on the bottom. I chose this because it seemed like something that I would actually use and challenging enough. I also didn't want to make it a regular chess board so I thought of making the board slope down. I chose to use cherry and walnut wood to make the boards for no reason other than I like the way those woods color pairs together. I am looking forward to going to the wood shop getting the wood and finalizing my design. A thing that I learned was double checking can be very helpful and helps you avoid mistakes that can make thing more difficult for you.
This is my inspiration.
