 Day Nine: Epoxy Imminent

With my bedside table project basically done, day 9 was the start of the epoxy part of my lamp. I started day 9 by putting another layer of finishing oil on my bedside table, bringing me up to 2/3 layers until I was done. I went over the entire project with steel wool in order to smooth out the surface of the wood post-finish, and then applied another layer of finishing oil on to the project that would further strengthen the wood and give it an even more vibrant color. Once that was done I began planning my lamp project, and in preparation for the epoxy I sanded over the entire thing and put wood glue into the holes that might have epoxy seep into them. Sadly I didn't yet have the laminated wood that I needed to create the mold box that would go around my lamp to hold the epoxy in, so I planned to go to home depot after lunch to get that.

    After lunch and home depot, I had everything I needed to begin the epoxy process, but I only had time today to complete the box around the epoxy. I started by measuring out what I would need to create the box, and then cut the pieces of the box to exactly what I would need using the table saw. After I fully screwed all the parts of the box together, I began putting packing tape over all the potential leakage points on the box, as if any epoxy leaked out it would get stuck to the wood and be a pain to take off. I got about halfway through before it was time to clean up, but in that time I feel like I learnt a lot about epoxy and how hard it is to keep it from sticking to things as well as the process of applying it, all things I never knew before and probably never would have known if I didn't do this project.

What did you do today? Today in woodworking, we started off by learning the basics about wood and how it is processed, cut, and made. Then we started learning about some of the tools we were gonna use such as the router, table saw, and jointer. Then we started deciding what our project was going to be and I decided on making a small pet house. After that, we put each got a piece of wood and used all the machines that we learned about to cut it to specific measurements. Day One - Just Getting Started (Aiden)

 Day 1 - Just Getting Started      Today was a day for planning and practicing for our upcoming woodworking projects, which involved us discussing the basics of woodworking. We started by discussing how our wood is turned from a tree into the wood we use, which was just a little background that was interesting to learn, and then we got to work practicing using the Jointer, a tool used for flattening the edges of wood that I first used during my Shadowboxes and Dioramas J-term last year, but had forgotten exactly how to use since.       To let us test, Mr. Grisbee gave us roughly cut pieces of wood and told us to cut them down to exactly 13.5in * 3in * 1/2in, a process that made use of the Jointer, as well as the Plainer and Table saw, which I personally thought was a good way to practice hands-on.       After we finished these, we got to work planning our projects for the rest of our A-term, and I decided that I was going to make two different projects, the first of which was going to

Day Ten: The End (Aiden)

The End (At the time of writing this, my lamp project isn't complete, so I'll be talking mainly about my bedside table project.) I put the last coat of finishing oil on my bedside table project today, and that marked the final step in completing it as complete. With it done, I think I honestly really like how it turned out, and I think the finishing oil really brought out some vibrant colors in the wood, making it look like it was done by a professional. I did realize shortly after finishing that I put the phone holder on the wrong side, as I usually place my phone close to me on my bedside table, but aside from that small error and the slight lean of the bedside table forward due to the base not being at a perfect 90 degree angle I think that it's pretty perfect and it turned out really close to the way I wanted.
